History
|
The castle stands
at the northern end of Loch Awe, one of Scotland's longest freshwater lochs. It was
built on a peninsular reaching out into the loch and protected on three sides by water.
The original castle was built in the 15th century by Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane. The building consisted of a square granite tower with five storeys. During the 16th and 17th centuries additions were made to the castle. The original tower was extended into an irregular quadrangle with towers at the three other corners. Gun loops were built at regular points around the walls. The design of the castle's defences indicates that the owners expected attacks from Highlanders rather than having to face long sieges. In the 18th century the castle was struck by lightning and subsequently abandoned. Until a short time ago the ruins were close to total collapse and dangerous to visit. However, recently the walls have been strengthened and the castle can now be viewed at the site. |
