Edzell Castle |
8
miles north of Brechin, off B966 In
the 16th century the Lindsay family established a tower house on a hill.
Around 1580, Sir David Lindsay built a courtyard mansion, adding a walled
enclosure surrounding a pleasance, bath house and summer house.
The secluded garden is one of the most notable of any castle in western
Europe. The walls of the pleasance contained sculptures, but when Lord
Edzell died the castle fell into ruin. In 1651 it was occupied
by Cromwell's troops, and was damaged during the Jacobite Uprising. The
tower remains together with the summer house. Now owned by the Department
of the Environment, the pleasance has been restored. more

| Glamis Castle |
12
miles north of Dundee, off A928 In the 11th and 14th centuries the Scottish kings
used Glamis as a hunting lodge. In 1376 Sir John Lyon built a tower house, his
grandson was made 1st Lord Glamis and the family have owned and lived at the castle since.
In 1540 Lady Janet Douglas, was seized by James V and burned as a witch. The king
took the castle and all the riches, after the king died Lady Glamis was proved innocent
and the castle and its estate was returned. In the 17th century, Lord Glamis
remodelled the castle and the work was continued by his son, which gives it the feel
of a French chateau. The castle is the family home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen
Mother. more information |
