Inveraray Castle |
19
miles north-east of Lochgiphead, off A83 When
Sir Neil Campbell supported Robert the Bruce in 1296 the Campbell clan
prospered, with an important part in Scotland's history. In 1648
their Inveraray 15th century castle and the town around it was created
a royal burgh. In 1743 the 3rd duke built a new castle, and the
town was demolished, another was built further away. In the Gothic Revival
style, the architect and the earl died before completion. The exterior
gives no hint of the 1770's interior. There are a series of state
rooms with wall paintings and plasterwork, and inside are collections
of tapestries, portraits, armoury and European and Oriental porcelain
