Hermitage Castle |
15
miles south of Hawick, off B6399 Dating from 1360, a fortified house rather than a
castle, with a courtyard. In the 14th century the Douglas family incorporated it into a
great tower. Near the castle is the remains of the hermitage that gives the castle
its name. Its position meant it passed from Scottish to English hands on many
occasions. In the 16th century the castle had reverted to the crown, and fell into ruin,
but in 1820 the Duke of Buccleugh carried out restoration. Now it appears as it did
in the 15th century. more

| Neidpath Castle |
1
mile west of Pebbles, off A72 Standing on a crag above the River Tweed, it was
constructed in the 14th century following Scotland's independence from England. In the
17th century the upper two floors were remodelled. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed at
the castle, as did James I and James VI. The castle was a stronghold for Charles II
and the walls still show the damage when it was besieged by Cromwell's troops. more
