Claypotts Castle |
2
miles east of Dundee, off A92 One of the best preserved examples
of the Scottish Z-plan tower house, built in 1570, the castle was designed
to deter local attacks rather than a major siege. The shape of
the castle meant any attacker approaching the castle would be exposed
to gunfire. The three linked towers rose to four storeys with
16 separate rooms. The kitchen and storerooms were on the ground
floor and the upper floors were used as accommodation for the Laird
and his family. Today the castle is overlooked by a modern housing
development. more
