Tantallon Castle |

miles east of North Berwick, off A198 Jutting out into Firth of Forth,
additions were made in the 16th century, but the buildings mainly date from
the 14th century. It was a Douglas family stronghold until 1699. In 1528 James V laid
siege to the castle after charging the Earl with treason, it was besieged for 20 days.
Tantallon fell to the king and Douglas fled to England, returning from exile in 1543.
In 1651 in the Civil war the castle was besieged by General Monck, surrendering
after 12 days.The Earls of Angus continued to live at Tantallon and in 1699 the castle was
sold but fell into ruin. more information |
