Culzean Castle |

miles west of Maybole, off A719 Standing
on the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Clyde,. the 16th century
castle was the property of the earls of Cassilis, chiefs of the Kennedy
clan and their major stronghold .When the family died out in 1759 the
title came to Sir Thomas Kennedy of Cluzean. Robert Adam in 1775 remodeled
the castle, creating an impressive facade, among the architect's finest
work. In 1879 the west wing was added by and in 1945 the castle was
given to the National Trust for Scotland, and is much restored. A flat
was created in 1946 for Eisenhower to use during his lifetime, in recognition
of his services in World War II. In 1969 the Culzean estate became Scotland's
first country park. more
