Dunvegan Castle |
23 miles west of Portree, off A850 Occupied
continuously by same family for longer than any other castle in Scotland, from 1237 Leod
established his stronghold on the rocky peninsular at Dunvegan and the castle has been the
home of the Macleods ever since.The Fairy Tower and other improvements were built in the
16th and 17th centuries. The entire castle was modernized in the 19th, with
rebuilding between 1938-1940 after a major fire. The castle's treasure is the Fairy
Flag, legend states it was given by fairies. more
