Stirling Castle |
15
miles north-west of Grangemouth, off M80
Its position made
it the one of most vital possessions in Scotland. Dating from
the 15th century but in the Wars of Independence it changed hands more
than any other castle. Robert the Bruce had the castle dismantled so
that it could not fall into English hands. After the Union of Crowns,
1603, the King and his court went to England, and the palace was neglected.
The castle's last military action was during the Jacobite Rising when
King George's troops prevented the Highlanders from crossing the Forth.
A statue of King Robert the Bruce overlooks the approach to the castle
and seven battlefields can be seen. more
