miles South-East of Merthyr Tydfil, off M4 A Norman castle was built in
1093 on the ruins of a Roman fortification.By the 12th century a stone keep was built and
in the 15th a gateway and stairs were added. It passed through powerful families to John
Stuart, Earl of Butte, his grandson, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, created a great palace in
the style of a medieval castle. In 1948 the castle was presented to the city of Cardiff.more information |

miles North-West of Cardiff, off A470 Originally
built in the 15th century and later surrounded by a strong earthwork
ditch, by the late-19th century it was just an ivy covered ruin. The
3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned William Burgess to fabricate a 13th
century castle, it appears more like a French chateau. Being small the
castle was built as a summer residence, undoubtedly Victorian. more
