Cardigan is a historic port and market town set on the River Teifi just before it enters the sea at Cardigan bay.
The town has been strategically important for centuries, with a 12th century castle overlooking the river. The castle has long been ruined, but there are plans to restore this historically important site. The town grew through shipbuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries and many of the fine buildings in the town date from this era.
Cardigan is a fairly large town, with a wide range of shops, pubs, restaurants and amenities. Theatr Mwldan is an excellent local arts venue presenting quality cinema, comedy, music, theatre and dance.
Cardigan is also known as the birthplace of Eisteddfod - the national festival and competition of music and poetry in the Welsh language. Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd hosted the first gathering at Cardigan castle in 1176, and the town was the venue again for the National Eisteddfod 1942.
