The village
of Daresbury, a few miles east of Runcorn, was the
birthplace of Lewis Carroll (1832 - 98). The son of an Anglian
priest, Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) spent the
first ten years of his life in this rural part of Cheshire.
One of
his most famous characters, Cheshire Cat, appears in Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland. All Saints Church has a delightful
stained glass window dedicated to the writer.
The village,
for some visitors, has become a place of pilgrimage because
of its association with Carroll.
Another
feature of Daresbury is the tower of the CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory.
A major government research centre, CCLRC has a large particle
accelerator known as the Synchroton Radiation Source.
