The small
residential town of Neston was originally a coal mining
town, with shafts dug out beneath the River Dee.
Neston
was also a major port until the Dee silted up and business
was transferred upstream to the town of Parkgate. The silting
continued, however, and Parkgate's promenade now only sees
high tides a few times a year.
The salt
marshes on the River Dee are feeding grounds for ducks, geese
and sea birds and are popular with naturalists. From Neston
there are magnificent views across the Dee estuary to the
hills of North Wales and the Hilbre Island bird sanctuary.
Neston
is associated with Lady Hamilton, the mistress of Lord Nelson,
who was born in the town in 1765. The views across the Dee
Estuary are particularly good from the Ness Botanic Gardens.
