Alloa is the largest town in the small county of Clackmannanshire, and one with a long history.
The impressive Alloa tower dates from the 14th century and was the seat of the Earls of Mar. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Alloa, along with her son James VI. The medieval building was added to in later centuries, but these regal houses did not survive the centuries, unlike the substantial stone tower itself.
Near Alloa is another tower house, the massive 15th century Sauchie Tower.
Alloa was once an important port on the River Forth and brewing centre, but these industries have now disappeared. Their legacy remains in the town today in its fine stone buildings and churches, mainly dating from the 19th century, and it is a pleasant place to visit and a good base for a tour of the heart of Scotland.
