Clackmannan, the town from which this small county takes its name, is set in a defensive position on a hill with an ancient tower overlooking the surrounding countryside.
This quaint town was named after the 'clack' standing stone dedicated to the pagan sea-god Mannan, which now stands beside the attractive 16th century tolbooth tower in its centre.
The main attraction however is the impressive Clackmannan Tower, a 14th century castle of imposing dimensions. Like others in the area it was formally surrounded by grand buildings added later, but these were later demolished. The tower itself can currently only be viewed from the outside due to subsidence problems that Historic Scotland are working to address.
