For many, a visit to the pretty mountain village of Capel Curig means only one thing - outdoor adventure in stunning Snowdonia scenery.
Home to Plas y Brenin, The National Mountain Centre for Wales, activities on offer in the area make full advantage of the wonderful rugged mountains, wooded hills, lakes and rivers - and include climbing, abseiling, kayaking, canoeing and hill walking. There are also a couple of outdoor equipment shops.
One of the most distinctive buildings nearby is the 'Ugly House', actually a very picturesque cottage made of large blocks of stone, probably built to attract the early Victorian tourists.
To the south of Capel Curig, on a rocky promontory, is the ruin of Dolwyddelan castle, a 13th century mountain fortress built by the Welsh ruler Llywelyn the Great. Set in a spectacular location, it offers terrific views over the craggy countryside.
