Founded
in 1948, Peterlee was among the first 'New towns' to
be created after World War II. The town was named after Peter
Lee, a prominent local miner.
Although
not a 'Pit Town', the new commercial and manufacturing centre
provided housing and employment for the residents of former
mining villages.
As Peterlee's
centrepiece, architectural designer Victor Passmore created
the abstract Apollo Pavilion.
Today
the new town is noted for its large open green spaces and
in recent years many of the town's public buildings have been
relocated to accomodate a £24 million redevelopment of the
town centre.
