Shildon,
located 2 miles south of Bishop Auckland, is considered to
be the 'Cradle of the Railways'.
In 1825
the world's first passenger rail journey took place along
the Stockton and Darlington Railway between Shildon and Stockton-on-Tees,
via Darlington.
The town
grew rapidly when the Stockton and Darlington Railway established
its workshops here in 1826.
Today
the town's connection with the birth of the railways is commemorated
by 'Locomotion' - The National Railway Museum.
