Stanley

|
|
The former mining town of Stanley
stands on a hill-top between Chester-le-Street and Consett.
Stanley grew up as a market
town on the old Roman road from Lanchester to Chester-le-Street.
In recent years the town has
suffered high unemployment with the loss of its main employers
including EverReady and British Steel at Consett.
The town centre has also been
badly affected by the opening of the vast Metro Centre shopping
complex in Gateshead.
To help eleviate its problems
Stanley's town centre is currently being refurbished.
Beamish, the world-famous open
air museum, is located at Stanley and the C2C cycle track
passes the town.
