The historic
town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies within a loop of
the River Eden.
Once
part of Scotland, the town was transferred to England in 1092
but suffered frequent raids by the Scots and was almost destroyed
in 1388.
Boroughgate
at the heart of the town links the well-preserved Norman castle
(currently closed) to the beautiful medieval church of St
Lawrence.
Lady
Ann Clifford, who lived in Appleby Castle and was responsible
for the improvement and expansion of many of the Clifford
family castles across Northern England, was buried at St Lawrence's
in 1676.
The former
county town of Westmorland, Appleby is now mainly a tourist
destination.
The famous
Appleby Horse Fair, held in early June each year, was established
in the 18th century and still attracts gypsies from all over
the country.
Appleby-in-Westmorland
is a station on the famous Settle - Carlisle railway. This
72 mile line passes through some of the most spectacular scenery
in the north of England.
Not far
from the town lies the restored Eden Valley Railway which
operates steam trains between Appleby and Warcop.
