Cockermouth, lying just outside the boundary of the Lake District National Park, is a peaceful market town which grew up in the 12th century at the confluence of the Rivers Cocker and Derwent.
The town was the birthplace of Dorothy and William Wordsworth. Wordsworth House, now owned by the National Trust and open to the public, is a fine Georgian house in Cockermouth's Main Street. The town was also the home of Fletcher Chrstian who lead the 'Mutiny on the Bounty'.
Although Cockermouth lies close to lakes such as Bassenthwaite, Crummock Water, Ennerdale and Loweswater, it is far less crowded than other Cumbrian towns.
Attractions include the partly ruined Norman castle (still occupied by Lady Egremont and only open to the public once a year during the Town Festival), the Creighton Mineral and Fossil Museum, which details the history of mining in the area from Roman times.
The respected Jenning's Brewery also offers regular public tours.
Note: The Cumberland Toy and Model Museum has closed down, as has the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre.
