Kirkby
Stephen
|
|
|
The market
town of Kirkby Stephen is situated at the head of the
Eden Valley. Lying
at 600 ft it is the highest town in the valley.
The Parish
Church of Kirkby Stephen stands on the site of an ancient
Saxon church and is known as the Cathedral of the Dales. Its
relics include the carved Loki Stone which dates from the
8th century and is one of only two such stones in Europe.
Kirky
Stephen is a popular centre for walkers on holiday in Cumbria
with the Pennines and eastern Lake District in easy reach,
and it is mid way on the Alfred Wainwright Coast to Coast
Walk.
It is
also on the Cumbrian Cycle Way.
Kirkby
Stephen is one of the stations on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. This
73 mile line runs through some of the most spectacular scenery
in the north of England.
