CumbriaMaryport

Maryport, is a small historic port on the Solway Coast.

Once an important Roman harbour, the settlement was developed as a coal port by Humphrey Senhouse in the 18th century and named after his wife.

Maryport quickly developed as an industrial centre in the 19th century with coal mines, an iron foundary and ship yards.

At the beginning of the 20th century the industrial port suffered an economic decline and today, after several regeneration projects, tourism is the major business of Maryport.

The Lake District Coast Aquarium in Maryport is one of the best places to see some of the varied marine life of the Irish Sea.

Other attractions include the small Maritime Museum by the harbourside and the Senhouse Roman Museum, housed in a former Royal Naval Reserve Station.

Maryport has become a major centre for the 'Blues' and stages a popular music festival every summer which attracts the top names in the business.
