The popular
seaside holiday resort of Silloth lies in an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty.Backed
by the Lake District Fells, the town has views across the
Solway Firth to Southern Galloway.
Silloth
has wonderful sunsets and the landscape artist JMW Turner
was attracted here to paint them in the early 19th century.
The town
became a railhead and port in the 1850s and was developed
with wide tree-lined streets. There is an attractive 36 acre
open space known simply as 'The Green' between the town and
the sea and a wide promenade stretching away to Skinburness.
Silloth
retains its small but busy dock.
Aspatria
lies inland, between Maryport and Wigton. Its name means
'the place of St Patrick's ash tree. Saint Kentigern's Church
in the small town is noted for its pre-Norman monuments.
