Windermere is on the hillside, a short distance from the shores of Lake Windermere, a popular destination for tourists in the Lake District, and those visiting Bowness-on-Windermere.
Once a village called Birthwaite, the arrival of the railway 1847 meant that the railway company named the village after the lake.
Windermere was developed by wealthy industrialists who could live in the Lake District and travel to work by rail. As the area around the station was developed it merged with Bowness.
You can take the ferry to Lakeside, on the south of the lake, to visit the local aquarium or take a train ride.
