The handsome town of Llangollen is set on the rushing River Dee, and particularly known for its historic canal.
This 11-mile stretch of canal travels through beautiful scenery, and over the breathtaking Pontcysyllte Aqueduct an amazing feat of 18th century engineering taking boats over the River at a height of 128 feet. This wonderful waterway is now designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site
The town itself is a good starting point for walks along the canal and riverside. It boasts a fine old 14th century stone bridge over the Dee and attractive streets ideal for strolling, with good shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Other attractions in the town include a heritage steam railway, the beautiful Plas Newydd house, a motor museum and Llangollen Pavilion. Overlooking the town are the dramatic ruins of Castell Dinas Bran.
The town is also famous for hosting the annual Llangollen International Eisteddfod, a competition and celebration of music and culture.
