Bovey Tracey is a nice town, the Gateway To Dartmoor (several other towns claim this !), with a history of conflict. In 1646 Cromwell took the Royalists by surprise, an old gateway, part of a former priory, was named Cromwells Arch.

Bovey Tracey has a small shopping area but it is fairly busy as it's close to Dartmoor, making it an ideal holiday touring base. Down by the bridge across the River Bovey is an interesting craft centre to visit in the restored Riverside Mill. The town once produced Bovey pottery. Outside Bovey Tracey the industrial estates spread out towards the main A38.

The road towards the A38 was popular in the 60's as it was one mile long and bikers, before speed limits were introduced, liked to achieve 100mph plus down the road on Sundays. This feat is not possible now due to roundabouts being introduced.

Bovey Tracey used to have a tramway, linking Haytor granite quarries to the Stover Canal. You can now wak along it as it is now part of 'The Templer Way Trail' which goes all the way to the River Teign.
