Dawlish is a quiet seaside holiday resort near the mouth of the River Exe.
The town is worth a wander around as there are pleasure gardens in the town centre, complete with the rather famous Black Swans, and the lovely Regency buildings along The Strand that reflect the town's development. Buildings of note in the narrow streets include the The Strand Mill in Brunswick Place, old cottages, and Manor House and Brook House, both built around 1800.
The resort prospered when the railway arrived in 1846 and you can find out more about Dawlish by visiting the town museum in Barton Terrace which is open Wednesday to Sunday during May to September.
Dawlish has a small shopping centre with most facilities and a railway station, often in danger of being washed away as the railway line follows the coast to Teignmouth. In 2014 the storms in January and February undermined the railway and the tracks fell into the sea cutting off the mainline service. Only by a great effort was the line restored in time for the Easter holiday period. There is now talk of re-opening the alternative line to Plymouth from Exeter via Okehampton.
Dawlish is very much a family resort with a pier and all the fun of a seaside holiday ! There are sand and shingle beaches just a short walk from the town centre. Just north of Dawlish is Dawlish Warren, a popular holiday spot with it's Blue Flag beach and sand dunes. You can get here by train,it's just one stop from Dawlish, or walk along the seawall between the railway track and the sea. Dawlish Warren has amusements, a golf course, nature reserve and holiday parks offering self-catering accommodation.
Every year the town hosts the very popular Dawlish Airshow in August. This is a popular event and if you are coming one of the best ways is take the train as parking gets difficult.
