The Devon city of Exeter is always busy and always worth taking the time to visit. Exeter is a university town, with the Northcott Theatre in the university campus, and the home of the Met Office.
Exeter Cathedral is on the site of an 11th century church, with the Cathedral Green around it a relaxing place to visit to wander in, although the coffee shops and restaurants around it are always tempting.
As the city was badly bombed in WWII parts of the shopping area is fairly new. The best shops are around Princesshay , a redeveloped central shopping area, with a range of chain stores and the more recently opened John Lewis department store.
There are plenty of facilities here, including cinemas, ten-pin bowling, theatres, and sporting activities. In the football season you can watch Exeter City play, or if you are a rugby fan, the Exeter Chiefs play at the new Sandy Park Stadium just outside the city.
There is lots to do in Exeter, with events nearly every week. Our top places to go when visiting are the Cathedral, the renovated Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, the Victorian Northernhay Gardens, and a wander down to the Exeter Canal and the River Exe where old buildings still remain from the city's woollen cloth industry and where you can take a 45 minute boat trip or walk along the canalside.
Exeter has two train stations, Exeter St Davids, which opened in 1844 is where the mainline trains stop and is just outside the city centre, whilst Exeter Central is close to the main shopping centre. Exeter airport is just east of the city with holiday charter flights as well as scheduled flights, including one to London City airport.
