Plymouth, a large city, on estuary of Plym and Tamar, with a real history of naval involvement.
The dockyards support Royal Naval vessels and there's always a ship in town!.
Badly bombed in WWII, the city has a new modern shopping centre replacing the previous one, and now the old buildings near the docks are being restored with apartments, art galleries and cafes..
Well worth a visit if you are on holiday or a weekend shopping break.
A University city with theatre and cinemas as well as lots to do and see.
Visit the shops at the Barbican, the Pilgrim Fathers left here for the New World in the Mayflower. Now the whole Barbican area, with it's narrow streets and passages, has been re-deveoped with shops, art galleries, and cafes.
Don't miss the famous statue of Sir Francis Drake on Plymouth Hoe, overlooks Plymouth Sound and Drakes Island.
Seamton's Tower shares the site, its base is old Eddystone Lighthouse which was rebuilt in 1881.
There are bridge and ferry crossings into Cornwall over the Tamar, Brunel railway bridge, the Royal Albert Bridge, completed 1859, and a modern road bridge.
It's worth taking the ferry across to Torpoint, as off the A374 is Antony House, National Trust, an 18th century house with extensive grounds.
