West DorsetPortland

Portland, reached over a causeway to this nearly-an island piece of land,4½ miles long by 1¾ miles wide, with its famous naval roots.

The only other industry was quarrying for the famous Portland Stone, used on many famous buildings all over the world including St Paul's Cathedral in London and the United Nation Headquarters in New York.

To the east is Portland Harbour, with breakwaters constructed in the last century by prisoners from Portland's Verne Prison. From 1872 to 1985 it was one of the United Kingdom's main naval bases. The naval base is now closed, and the large base is being developed for other uses.

To the south there a new lighthouse, next to an older lighthouse.
