In the agricultural heart of Dumfries and Galloway lies Castle Douglas, a pleasant and thriving market town set on beautiful Carlingwark Loch with strong ties to the land.
Livestock auctions are still held weekly in the town, and its history and renown as a centre for trading, producing and serving excellent local produce has led to it becoming designated a self-styled Food Town to showcase its wide range of independent businesses.
The name of Castle Douglas is a misleading one as there is no actual castle. The town was built as a planned community in the 18th century by Sir William Douglas to serve his cotton mills, and was named after him. It is however an excellent base from which to explore Southern Scotland and some real castles, such as the nearby Threave Castle, a formidable 14th century fortress built on its own island.
Other attractions close by include the lovely Threave Gardens, set in the grounds of an imposing Victorian mansion with some spectacular views across this scenic region.
