The pretty town of Kirkcudbright has long attracted artists, and is known today as Scotland's Artist's Town in recognition of this heritage.
With a picturesque working fishing harbour on the River Dee, characterful white and pastel-coloured buildings, and the dramatic ruin of MacLellan's Castle, Kirkcudbright has much to entice visitors - whether artistic or not. The fine, wide streets are perfect for strolling and shopping and taking in the bracing sea air.
Attractions in the town with an artistic connection include Broughton House, home of artist E A Hornel. This lovely 18th century building has the look of a dolls house, and houses a fascinating collection of artworks as well as a beautiful hidden garden. The Tolbooth Art Centre displays works by local artists past and present, and there are a number of other galleries and craft exhibitions to visit.
Just along the coast lie the beautiful vaulted ruins of 12th century Dundrennan Abbey, scene of Mary Queen of Scot's last night on Scottish soil.
