Newton Stewart tourist information

The market town of Newton Stewart is set on the banks of the beautiful salmon River Cree, and is a popular base from which to explore the area, particularly the Galloway Forest Park.

The town boasts some very picturesque buildings, and an attractive stone bridge across the river. As a market town serving a wide rural area, Newton Stewart has retained a traditional feel with independent shops, and is well placed to serve visitors to the great outdoors with all the amenities they need.

Often termed the gateway to the Galloway Forest Park, Newton Stewart is also popular with hillwalkers, mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities. The beautiful and remote Forest Park covers 373 square miles and has an estimated 1 million trees, along with dramatic views of the stunning hills and peaks. From peaceful woodland walks, to more strenuous climbs to the top of the Merrick (at 843m the highest peak in the area), appreciating the scenery at lovely Loch Trool, or wildlife-watching, the forest truly has something for everyone.

Scotland's longest long-distance footpath, The Southern Upland Way, also passes north of Newton Stewart on its 212 mile journey through some of the best scenery in the country.
