Standing on the land that connects the beautiful peninsula of the Rhins of Galloway to the rest of Scotland, Stranraer is a historic harbour. A traditional Scottish town, it is perhaps now best known as a ferry port serving Belfast in Northern Ireland.
At the centre of Stranraer is the well-preserved mediaeval Castle of St John. This imposing fortress was once used as the town jail, but now houses an exhibition telling the story of this historic town. There is also another excellent local museum housed in the interesting town hall.
There are many archaeological sites in this quiet part of Scotland, and nearby are the impressive ruins of 12th century Glenluce Abbey, in a peaceful country setting.
However, the highlight of the area is arguably the stunning Castle Kennedy and Gardens, the beautiful grounds of 19th century Lochinch Castle built around the ruins of the original building. This extensive park is set around two lochs with lovely walks through woods and Rhododendron, and benefits from a mild climate ideal for the more exotic species found in the gardens.
