Wigtown tourist information

Scotland's National Book Town, Wigtown is home to numerous bookshops of all sorts, and an annual literary festival which brings the town to life through the power of the written word.

Once a historic port, Wigtown is a pleasant day out with many other attractions.

The harbour has silted over the centuries, but this coastal mudflat environment is crucial for wildlife, and Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest in the country and home to thousands of migratory birds. A viewing area in the County Buildings gives wonderful views over the surrounding area, and there are CCTV links to the nests of the breeding Ospreys which have recently returned to the area.

Across the bay lies evidence of the ancient history of this region. The stone circles at Cairn Holy are Neolithic burial cairns, remarkably entact given they may have stood on this site for 6,000 years.
