The vibrant University city of Dundee is Scotland's fourth largest, and an attractive and upcoming place to visit.
Set on the Firth of Tay in the centre of Scotland, Dundee has a long history with Roman and Pictish origins. Braveheart William Wallace was educated here in the 13th century, and the city saw more than its fair share of battles over the centuries until its Victorian heyday when it derived great prosperity from the interlinked industries of sea trading, shipbuilding, whaling, and textiles.
Speak of Dundee and many will think of the famous cake and marmalade that bear its name. Both originated at the James Keiller's jam factory, and while the marmalade is now made elsewhere, the delicious rich fruit cake topped by almonds is still a local speciality.
Some of Dundee's main attractions today are its bustling city centre with cafes, restaurants and bars, and a burgeoning arts and cultural scene. The McManus is Dundee's main art gallery and museum, housed in a stunning Gothic building that has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment. Other popular venues include the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre and imposing Caird Hall.
Promoted as One City, Many Discoveries, Dundee also celebrates its proud reputation for discovery, science and culture. Visitors can learn about the innovation that powered the industrial revolution at the award-winning Verdant Works. Other popular attractions include the RRS Discovery, the ship which took Captain Scott on his expedition to Antarctica, and the HM Frigate Unicorn, a historic warship. Right up to date is the Sensation exhibition at the Dundee Science Centre.
