The traditional small town of Cumnock grew in prosperity in the 19th century due to its coal and iron industry, and is a pleasant place with some attractive buildings.
One of these is the recently refurbished Baird Institute Museum, an excellent local museum which also has an exhibition dedicated to James Keir Hardie, who founded the British Labour Party and lived in Cumnock. There is also a bust of Hardie outside the imposing Victorian town hall.
Just outside Cumnock is the beautiful Dumfries House, an elegant 18th century stately home largely unchanged in 250 years. The estate was recently bought by a consortium headed by the Prince of Wales and is now open to the public to enjoy.
