East Dunbartonshire Tourist Information
Welcome to East Dunbartonshire ...
Immediately to the north of Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire is made up of suburbs of the city leading out to some beautiful countryside beyond.
The Campsie Fells are a very scenic and rugged range of hills with some beautiful views to enjoy, yet only a short distance from the bustling city. The pretty small village of Clachan of Campsie is next to Campsie Glen, with its picturesque walks and waterfalls on the Kirk Burn.
For more serious walking, Milngavie is the start of the West Highland Way, a long-distance route that travels 154km (96 miles) past Loch Lomond to Fort William through some of Scotland's most stunning scenery.
You can also travel the area by water on the restored Forth & Clyde Canal which passes through the region and towns such as Kirkintilloch.
The area also has some ancient historic sites, from the Roman Baths in Bearsden to the fragments of the Antonine Wall, a fortification many miles north of the more famous Hadrian's wall marking the limits of the Roman Empire in 142AD. The wall was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and one of the best places to view the Roman remains is at Bar Hill Fort near the village of Twechar.
