Kirkintillochis a small historic market town north of Glasgow.
Like many settlements in this area of Scotland, the town has ancient Roman connections, it's name deriving from the Celtic 'Caerpentaloch' meaning the (Roman) fort at the head of the hillock.
The Roman remains now cannot be seen in the town, but there are good views of the remnants of the historic Antonine Wall in the nearby countryside, such as at Twechar. There is a good local museum housed in the Auld Kirk.
The town is perhaps now most visited for the restored Forth and Clyde Canal, reopened in 2001 after many years of neglect. You can now tour the canal by boat or on foot, passing through some beautiful East Dunbartonshire countryside.
