The area around the small village of Twechar is one of the best places to view the remains of the historic Antonine Wall, built in 142AD marking the northern limits of the Roman Empire.
Bar Hill fort was the highest defensive fortification of the wall, which would have had forts every few miles along its length. There are impressive panoramic views over the surrounding countryside from this section. The remains of the headquarters building, bath-house and well can still be seen today, and there is also an Iron Age fort on the site.
Just a short distance east near Croy is the Iron Age fort at Croy Hill, which affords good views of the site of the wall and over the lovely valley of the River Kelvin.
