Haddington is the County Town of East Lothian, a pleasant and prosperous place, but one with a turbulent history little evident today.
Once the 4th largest town in Scotland in the Middle Ages, its position on the Great North Road, a main artery to Edinburgh, meant it suffered the brunt of several invading English armies in the 14th century.
As well as taking in the fine architecture and browsing in the shops, there are several historic sites nearby to visit, such as St Mary's Collegiate Church in a lovely setting on the river Tyne, and Trapain Law, an Iron Age fort east of the town.
The nearby 14th century Lennoxlove House has an extensive art gallery and is home to one of the most important portrait collections in Scotland. It also houses the death mask of Mary, Queen of Scots.
