As you could guess from its name, Musselburgh has a long fishing history. Literally meaning 'mussel town', it has been settled since Roman times and is now the largest town in East Lothian.
The town has the oldest racecourse in Scotland, dating back to 1816, and holds racing events throughout the year. Another historic sporting venue is Musselburgh Links where golf has been played as least as far back as 1672. Visitors can even hire hickory clubs to experience golf as it was played in years gone by.
The town and surrounding area have a wealth of historic buildings to discover. The Old Town Hall and tollbooth date back to the 16th century, and the bridge over the River Esk is even older, built on Roman foundations in the 13th century. Edward II crossed this bridge in his retreat from the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. There are several ruined castles such as Craigmillar Castle, and the lovely Newhailes House set in landscaped parkland.
For those who like their history a little more contemporary, the Museum of flight is part of the National Museums of Scotland, and has exhibitions of aeroplanes through the years - from Spitfires to Concorde.
