Bridlington, lying to the south of Flamborough Head, is a coastal resort and minor seaport on the North Sea.
The town is divided into two parts: Old Town, the ancient market town, lying about a mile from the sea, and Bridlington Quay, with its modern houses, fringing Bridlington Bay.
The town is divided in two by the River Derwent. Rising in the North Yorkshire Moors, the river flows through the village before joining the River Ouse and entering the sea at the Humber Estuary. Recently the River Derwent has caused serious flooding in Stamford Bridge and despite the completion of flood defences in 2004, the settlement was again innundated in 2007.
Northwards the dramatic coastline is very steep as the great spur of Flamborough Head projects eastwards into the North Sea.
Bridlington's first hotel opened in 1805 and the town soon developed as a popular holiday resort for industrial workers from West Yorkshire. During its heyday Bridlington was one of England's leading resorts but the advent of cheap foreign holidays has meant that tourism has declined.
Today the resort boasts two award-winning beaches, stretching out on either side of its historic harbour. Visitors can stroll along the attractively designed promenades and enjoy everything from fun fairs to peaceful areas to sit and admire the view. Recently a 'London Eye' style wheel has been built near the harbour.
From Bridlington Harbour, the Yorkshire Belle takes visitors on pleasure boat trips around the spectacular chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head.
Nearby Bempton Cliffs, home to a RSPB Nature Reserve, are considered to be the best place in the country to spot seabirds, including Atlantic Puffins and Northern Gannets.
Away from the sea, the resort offers shops, a market, attractions, restaurants and a chance to explore the historic Old Town of Bridlngton.
