Driffield (also known as Great Driffield) is known as the 'Capital of the Worlds. This market town lies between York, Bridlington and Beverley.
Towards the northern end of the town lies Moot Hill, site of the now ruined Driffield Castle. Only the earthworks remain of this Norman motte and baily fortress, which was built in the 11th century and re-fortified in the 13th century.
Dominating the skyline of Driffield is the 500 year old tower of All Saint's Church, which can be seen from miles around.
The opening of the Driffield Navigation in the 19th century put Driffield on the map and the canal, now being restored, is still a focal point in the town. There are some lovely walks beside the canal and the town's three becks (streams).
Markets are held in Driffield on Thursdays and Saturdays and an award-winning Farmers' Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month.
One of the unique traditions of the town is 'Scrambling'. Dating from the 18th century, this takes place a couple of days in the New Year and involves local children walking the main street shouting an ancient rhyme to shopkeepers in exchange for money and treats.
Driffield is home to the largest one-day agricultural show in the country, held in July. Another highlight is the Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally. Held in August, this show puts particular emphasis on agricultural history and includes demonstrations such as ploughing and threashing.
