The small seaside resort of Hornsea was originally a rural settlement, but Hornsea developed as a 'watering place' in the late 18th century.
Following the opening of the railway in 1845 Hornsea became a popular commuter town for Hull. When the railway was axed in the 1960s the old railway line became the last lap of the Trans Pennine Trail. This well-maintained trail, ideal for walkers and cyclists, ends on Hornsea seafront.
Hornsea Mere, near the town centre, is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. Noted for its wildlife (including up to 250 species of birds), the Mere is also popular for fishing and sailing.
The seaside resort is best known for the Hornsea Pottery. Established in 1949, the pottery factory produced a wide range of colletable ceramics until 2000, when it went into receivership. The award-winning Hornsea Folk Museum at Newbegin has a large collection of Hornsea Pottery on display.
Another popular attraction on the outskirts of the town is Honeysuckle Farm, a working farm that has been opened to the public since 1992.
