The traditional seaside resort of Withernsea, on the North Sea, developed as a holiday destination in the mid-19th century following the construction of the Hull and Holderness Railway.
Although Withernsea has declined in popularity in recent years (following the advent of cheap foreign holidays), the resort is still very busy in July and August. Its beach has been awarded Blue Flag status.
The wide promenade is marked by the refurbished Pier Towers, all that remains of Withernsea Pier. Built in 1877, the pier was originally 364 m long but a series of impacts by local seacraft eventually reduced it to just 15 m. This final section of the historic structure was removed during the construction of coastal defences in the 1930's.
Withernsea's most famous landmark is its 127 ft inland lighthouse, which towers above the other buildings of the town. No longer in use, the striking white lighthouse now houses a museum.
On the outskirts of the town stands RAF Holmpton. Visitors can go on guided tours of the once secret radar station that operated here during the Cold War.
You can also visit the Valley Gardens and the RNLI museum
To the south of Withernsea lies Spurn Head, one of the most striking features of the UK's coastline.

All that can be seen above ground at RAF Holmpton is guardhouse and a few buildings set in 31 acres of green fields. For years this underground bunker remained a secret, even in the local area.
