Edinburgh City Tourist Information
Welcome to Edinburgh City ...
Edinburgh City includes the City of Edinburgh itself and some small towns around it. Scotland's capital city has a combination of history and culture that make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK.
Busy and sophisticated, the city is home to around 430,000 people, but for those who crave a quieter time it is surrounded by dramatic natural scenery such as the Pentland Hills and the wild peak of 'Arthur's Seat', just a short journey from the city centre.
To the east of the city is Portobello Beach on the Firth of Forth, a popular place for locals to relax on the promenade or its wide, sandy beach.
Leith, to the north, was once a busy dockyard. After years of decline, it is now unrecognisable from the town that inspired the gritty novel Trainspotting and is home to new waterside developments, converted warehouses, fashionable shops and bars, and the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Edinburgh International Airport lies 7 miles west of the city, and buses link visitors to the centre. A new tramway is due to connect the airport with the city centre, but this has been dogged by problems and is currently due for completion in 2014.
