Leith is Edinburgh's port and once the city's thriving trading hub.
Previously known as a run-down and rough district of the city (as described in Ivrine Walsh's 1993 novel Trainspotting), it has undergone a transformation in recent years which has earned it a reputation instead as a smart and upcoming part of town.
Examples of this new regeneration include Victoria Quay which houses offices of the Scottish Parliament. Restored warehouses and new waterside developments have opened with fashionable shops, restaurants and bars as well as smart homes for the new influx of people to the area.
Attractions for the visitor include the Ocean Terminal, a large shopping complex designed by Sir Terence Conran, and the Royal Yacht Britannia, permanently berthed behind it.
