EssexCanvey Island

Canvey Island, once a mud bank separated from the mainland by a river, was reclaimed in the 17th century, and now relies on flood prevention walls to survive.

A victim of the 1953 floods when 58 people died here, a flood that affected most of England's East Coast.

Some good beaches, and despite being behind sea walls there is a population of 37,000 living in houses built on concrete rafts.
